Welcome to Buster's Blog

Irregular commentary on whatever's on my mind -- politics, sports, current events, and life in general. After twenty years of writing business and community newsletters, fifteen years of fantasy baseball newsletters, and two years of email "columns", this is, I suppose, the inevitable result: the awful conceit that someone might actually care to read what I have to say. Posts may be added often, rarely, or never again. As always, my mood and motivation are unpredictable.

What To Believe

"Power is tearing human minds to pieces and putting them together again in new shapes of your own choosing."

"Don't you see that the whole aim is to narrow the range of thought?"

"Orthodoxy means not thinking -- not needing to think.  Orthodoxy is unconsciousness."

"The past was erased, the erasure was forgotten, the lie became the truth."

"What you're seeing and what you're reading is not what's happening.  Don't believe the crap you see from people on fake news."

"Always assume the opposite of what they're telling you on the big news stations."

The first four quotes are from 1984 by George Orwell.  The next one is from the Lyin' King during a speech to the VFW last week.  The final quote is from Tucker Carlson of Fox News (a big news station).

It's incredible to me that we need to keep repeating this -- Trump is always lying, Fox News is not much better, Facebook is no place to get news, you must always check your sources, and there's no such thing as an alternative fact.

So, as a public service, and to reiterate what should be obvious, Buster presents an incomplete list of various media sources divided into two simple categories:  What To Believe, and What Not To Believe.  (If you really need to study these lists, god help you.)

What To Believe (Not Crap)
New York Times, Washington Post, LA Times, USA Today, most local newspapers, Reuters, the AP, Bloomberg News, NPR, BBC, NBC, ABC, CBS, PBS, CNN. MSNBC, Time, New Yorker, Rolling Stone, Esquire, Vanity Fair, The Nation, The Atlantic, The Guardian, Politico, Huffington Post, Daily Beast, Vox, Real Clear Politics, Axios, Slate, Wonkette, etc.

What Not To Believe (Crap)
