Welcome to Buster's Blog

Irregular commentary on whatever's on my mind -- politics, sports, current events, and life in general. After twenty years of writing business and community newsletters, fifteen years of fantasy baseball newsletters, and two years of email "columns", this is, I suppose, the inevitable result: the awful conceit that someone might actually care to read what I have to say. Posts may be added often, rarely, or never again. As always, my mood and motivation are unpredictable.

What's In A Name? (2008)

(From the Buster Gammons column of 2/27/08)

They are nuts in Tampa. The team is no longer the Tampa Bay Devil Rays. They are henceforth just the Rays. The Tampa Bay Rays. The Bay Rays. You can call me Ray, or you can call me Bay . . . but you doesn’t has to call me anything that refers to Satan, Prince of Darkness!!!! This misguided decision is the result of arm-twisting by some soulless Chamber of Commerce apparatchik. Either that or those wacko Christian fundamentalists have more influence than I thought.

In related news, the ACC’s Duke University teams will now be the Duke Blue. And in the NHL, the New Jersey Devils will be known as, simply, New Jersey.
