Welcome to Buster's Blog

Irregular commentary on whatever's on my mind -- politics, sports, current events, and life in general. After twenty years of writing business and community newsletters, fifteen years of fantasy baseball newsletters, and two years of email "columns", this is, I suppose, the inevitable result: the awful conceit that someone might actually care to read what I have to say. Posts may be added often, rarely, or never again. As always, my mood and motivation are unpredictable.

Orlando

Orlando.  Fucking awful.  Again.

The blood is not even dry yet, the families of the dead have just barely begun to grieve, and already the reactionary forces of hatred and bigotry are flapping their stupid lips.

One goddamn twisted individual recently saw two gay men kissing, didn't like it, easily and quickly bought some guns, and drove 120 miles to express his displeasure by shooting up a gay night nightclub.  Fifty-some are dead, fifty-some more are injured.  It's the worst mass shooting in U.S. history.

The killer was a loner -- an unstable wife beater, racist, anti-Semite and homophobe, always angry at the world.  His name was Omar Mateen and he called 911 from the nightclub to claim "allegiance" to ISIS.  But because of his Arabic name and his phone call, conservatards are insisting his rampage was radical Islamic terrorism, and anyone who doesn't agree is Un-American.

Humpty Trumpty wasted no time in flinging his own feces.  He demanded that if Barack Obama didn't start calling it radical Islamic terrorism, he should resign immediately.  He said if Hillary Clinton couldn't say radical Islamic terrorism, she shouldn't run for president.  (Obama and Clinton both said it was terrorism.)  The Great Trumpkin also tweeted that while he "appreciated all the congrats for being right on radical Islamic terrorism," what he really wanted was "toughness, or else we aren't going to have a country anymore."   That's some Grade-A bullshit fear-mongering, Donnie!

What's to be gained by the instant and uninformed use of the phrase radical Islamic terrorism?  This guy acted alone.  His father says he wasn't motivated by religion, but hatred for gay people.  Why are right-wingers so adamant about demonizing an entire religion?  Omar Mateen is no more of a representative Muslim than Robert Lewis Dear is a representative Christian.  I'm no fan of any religion, but killers like these are aberrations, perversions of religion, not symbols of it.  However evil they are, they are insignificant in the big picture.

In the big picture, good is more powerful than evil, and the good outnumber the evil.  If this were not so, the human race would have eaten itself alive long ago.  So stay strong, reject the hate and fear and useless name-calling, reject Trumpism, and keep faith those who do the same.
