Just like when Mitt Romney spoke to the NAACP this summer, Paul Ryan's comments this week to an AARP convention were not intended to convey empathy or shared concern. Quite the opposite, they were given as an intentionally defiant flip-off: Screw you! We're adamantly opposed to your viewpoint and we want you to know it. We don't care about you and we don't need your vote. C'mon -- boo me!
Today's GOP thinks it's good strategy to publicly antagonize certain segments of the opposition. They're not trying to change anyone's mind. They just want to "fire up the base," who love nothing more than to see their white knights get booed by black people and old people. It reinforces their prejudices.
Compassionate conservatism 2.0.
