Welcome to Buster's Blog

Irregular commentary on whatever's on my mind -- politics, sports, current events, and life in general. After twenty years of writing business and community newsletters, fifteen years of fantasy baseball newsletters, and two years of email "columns", this is, I suppose, the inevitable result: the awful conceit that someone might actually care to read what I have to say. Posts may be added often, rarely, or never again. As always, my mood and motivation are unpredictable.

"They're Making It Too Damn Easy!"

The lovely Mrs. Gammons and I went out to dinner last night.  Before eating, we had a couple drinks at the bar and we ran into an acquaintance.  He happens to be a statehouse lobbyist for the gas industry and an acute Republican, but a nice guy nevertheless.  We exchanged pleasantries and took a seat beside him.

He was engaged in conversation with the patrons to the other side and we couldn't help but overhear.  They were all bitchin' and moanin' about the new early voting facility set to open next Tuesday on Morse Rd.  Why is that so upsetting to this handful of cocktail-hour conservatives?

It's big, being located in an old Kohl's store.  It has easy access, on a major thoroughfare just off the freeway.  A large sign "advertises" its existence.  It's on a major bus route, and all those bus riders will see it everyday.  The surrounding neighborhoods have heavy concentrations of blacks, Latinos, etc. -- guess who they're gonna vote for?  Clearly, it's an unfair effort to gain Democratic votes from those who might not otherwise participate.

Being eavesdroppers, we did not jump into this swamp of bigotry.  We just sipped our drinks and rolled our eyes.

Should I have told our friend that on Monday night, on behalf of Organizing For America, I'm driving a carload of OSU students from campus to that very early voting site?  (They're going to camp out so as to be among the first to cast their ballots on Tuesday morning.)

Nah.  Just would've pissed him off.  Tee-hee!
