Welcome to Buster's Blog

Irregular commentary on whatever's on my mind -- politics, sports, current events, and life in general. After twenty years of writing business and community newsletters, fifteen years of fantasy baseball newsletters, and two years of email "columns", this is, I suppose, the inevitable result: the awful conceit that someone might actually care to read what I have to say. Posts may be added often, rarely, or never again. As always, my mood and motivation are unpredictable.

Email To Elected Officials: Protect The Special Counsel

The walls are closing in on Cheeto Benito and he's running scared.  He spent the weekend lashing out on Twitter, spewing vituperation at anyone not actively kissing his ass.  He's in a dangerous, vengeful mood, but Republicans have had little to say.  So today I sent the following to some elected officials.

To Sen. Mitch McConnell, Sen. Rob Portman, Rep. Paul Ryan
cc:  Sen. Sherrod Brown

Given the president's recent firing of Andrew McCabe and his subsequent attacks on the work of Special Counsel Robert Mueller, it's clear this president will stop at nothing in his bid to prematurely end Mueller's investigation.  He may very likely attempt to fire Mueller, which would cause a national crisis and outcry not seen since Watergate.  This cannot be allowed.

You must therefore immediately enact legislation to protect Mr. Mueller and the Office of the Special Counsel from improper interference by the president.  This legislation must ensure that the Special Counsel is able to pursue its investigation thoroughly and completely, and must also ensure that should Mr. Mueller leave his position for any reason prior to concluding his probe, another Special Counsel be appointed immediately to finish the work.

Your words are not enough.  The situation is dire, and only specific protective legislation will suffice.  The GOP's silence and inaction are shameful.  You must stop enabling this defective president.

Imagine if the tables were turned and it was President Obama whose unseemly relationship with a foreign adversary had been under investigation, and Obama had reacted to the scrutiny by angrily firing intelligence officials and making wild threats every day.  What would you Republicans have done under those circumstances?  We all know the answer.

Stop protecting this troubled president.  Do your legislative job.  Protect the American people, democracy and our Constitution.
