Welcome to Buster's Blog

Irregular commentary on whatever's on my mind -- politics, sports, current events, and life in general. After twenty years of writing business and community newsletters, fifteen years of fantasy baseball newsletters, and two years of email "columns", this is, I suppose, the inevitable result: the awful conceit that someone might actually care to read what I have to say. Posts may be added often, rarely, or never again. As always, my mood and motivation are unpredictable.

It's Been One Hell Of A Day Or So At The Circus

In barely the past 24 hours at the Prima Donald Do-It-Yourself Three-Ring Circus:

Chairman Devin Nunes (R) arbitrarily shut down the House Intel Committee investigation into Russian election interference and issued a one-sided, Republicans-only report.  Another Republican ran to Fox News to announce this amazing report, which found no collusion, no obstruction, only "inadvertent contacts" between the Trump campaign and Russia, and no attempt on Russia's part to help Trump.  (They were meddling in our elections just for shits and giggles.  Right!)  The report goes so far as to find collusion between Russian and the Hillary Clinton campaign, and manages to blame Obama for all of it!

This incredible document stands in stark contrast to the findings of U.S. intelligence agencies, who had no trouble discerning Russia's intention to help Trump and harm Clinton.  It will likely also be at odds with the report of the House Intel Democrats, with the Senate Intel Committee's report, and with Robert Mueller's report.

At 150 pages, the Republican report is nothing but the Nunes memo writ long -- a laughable piece of obvious propaganda written at Trump's direction to give Trump a bit of cover he can point to.  (Tweetle Drumpf wasted no time in doing just that, in all caps.)  Hell, Trump might as well have written the damn thing himself, except we all know he can't write 150 words, let alone 150 pages.

(Humorist Andy Borowitz says that the House Republicans also concluded that there was no attempt by the Imperial Forces of the Japanese Naval Air Service to influence the outcome of Pearl Harbor!)

Secretary of State Rex Tillerson was ambushed this morning, fired by Trump tweet, without warning, without any reason given, and while travelling out of the country on government business.  (Trump is such an abject chicken-shit.  He never fires people in person, unless you count his old fake TV show.)  The axing was a shock but not a surprise.  Rex publicly disagreed with Don the Con on North Korea, Iran, Russia, the Paris climate accord, Charlottesville, etc.  And Tillerson famously and correctly called him a "fucking moron."

Trump has picked current CIA Director Mike Pompeo to replace Tillerson at the State Dept.  Pompeo is a Tea Bag former Congressman from Kansas.  He was a blowhard on the Benghazi Committee, and once wrote a bill to prohibit all GMO food labeling in the U.S.  He's a proud Islamophobe, torture fan, and opponent of the Iran nuclear deal.  Trump's kinda guy.  Trump's choice to replace Pompeo at the CIA is the controversial Deputy Director Gina Haspel, the queen of black-site waterboarding and evidence destruction.  When you've reached the bottom of the barrel, look underneath the barrel and this is what you'll find.  Good gawd!

British intelligence officials and scientists have confirmed that Russian agents used a lethal nerve agent, Novichok, on the streets of London in an attempt to kill a former spy and his daughter.  Use of nerve agents is specifically banned by international treaty.  British Prime Minister Theresa May minced no words as she laid the blame on Russia and threatened retaliation.  Rex Tillerson echoed her comments.  Trump said nothing.
