Welcome to Buster's Blog

Irregular commentary on whatever's on my mind -- politics, sports, current events, and life in general. After twenty years of writing business and community newsletters, fifteen years of fantasy baseball newsletters, and two years of email "columns", this is, I suppose, the inevitable result: the awful conceit that someone might actually care to read what I have to say. Posts may be added often, rarely, or never again. As always, my mood and motivation are unpredictable.

The Kids Are Alright

Yesterday was National School Walkout Day, and thousands upon thousands of students across America walked out of their classrooms at 10:00 a.m. and remained outside for 17 minutes as a protest against our national gun insanity.
In Washington DC on the Capitol steps

The vast majority of school districts were supportive of this grassroots movement, but there were a few exceptions in some of the more stick-up-the-ass districts where students participating in the walkout were punished with . . . detention!  Oh no!  How awful!

At Whetstone High School, Columbus, OH
Students at Columbus Whetstone High School made a double statement.  After their 17 minute absence from class, they filed back into the building and staged a "reverse evacuation" -- locking themselves in their classrooms per the school's "active shooter" protocol.

Although these protests sprang from a tragedy, all these motivated kids are inspiring.  The kids are alright!  I haven't felt this proud of my country since November 4, 2008.

Be sure to watch Randy Rainbow's parody video "Kids!" below.  It's great!
