Welcome to Buster's Blog

Irregular commentary on whatever's on my mind -- politics, sports, current events, and life in general. After twenty years of writing business and community newsletters, fifteen years of fantasy baseball newsletters, and two years of email "columns", this is, I suppose, the inevitable result: the awful conceit that someone might actually care to read what I have to say. Posts may be added often, rarely, or never again. As always, my mood and motivation are unpredictable.

"No Thanks, I Gotta Run To Walmart"

Robert Mueller's Trump-Russia probe rolls on and he'd like to interview the fake president, whose lawyers are doing all they can to prevent that little chat, knowing their client would perjure himself instantly.  Whenever Mueller's report is finalized, with or without Trump's cooperation, it's up to Deputy AG Rod Rosenstein (since AG Jefferson Beauregard had to recuse) to decide what to do with that information.  Will he release the report to Congress?  To the public?  Will he indict Trump or others?  It's a big deal and it's his call.  Most say he's a person of integrity, not of politics.

Many knowledgeable observers worry that Trump is poised to deflate the whole thing by firing Rosenstein and replacing him with someone who'll end the investigation and just sit on the report without releasing it.  If that were to happen, Rosenstein's successor would be the #3 at the DOJ, Rachel Brand.  Most say she's also a person of integrity.

Maybe not.  On Friday, after barely 10 months in her high-ranking DOJ job, Brand suddenly quit to take a position with Walmart.  (How fitting!  She leaves a cheap, low-quality administration for a cheap, low-quality retailer.)  "No thanks, I can't stick around for the constitutional crisis of a generation.  I gotta run to Walmart!"  In fairness, she'll be their top corporate attorney, but her timing is highly suspect and adds to the speculation that Rosenstein will be axed.

If that happens, next in line at the DOJ is Solicitor General Noel Francisco.  He worked in Dubya's administration, was a law clerk for Antonin Scalia, and is a reliable Trump-friendly lawyer.  Great.

Rachel's flight may be another indication that Trump's ship of state is sinking.
