You've probably seen the slick new ads with the tagline "I Am An Energy Voter." It's latest disinformation campaign from the American Petroleum Institute (API). It's basic message is:
"Fossil fuels are good. You like cheap gas, don't you? Reducing carbon will cost you your job. We can drill our way to energy independence. So you better vote for politicians who support the oil/gas/coal industries."
A happy horseshit appeal to the selfishly short-sighted.
Of course, everybody likes cheap gas. But a real energy voter thinks longer-term. A real energy voter would vote for people with policies to phase out fossil fuels ASAP. A real energy voter understands that global warming is a fact and an immediate global threat. A real energy voter knows that real energy independence does not mean drill, baby, drill -- it means much more solar, wind and other alternative energies, and it means putting a price on carbon, and it means starting now, not later.
