Welcome to Buster's Blog

Irregular commentary on whatever's on my mind -- politics, sports, current events, and life in general. After twenty years of writing business and community newsletters, fifteen years of fantasy baseball newsletters, and two years of email "columns", this is, I suppose, the inevitable result: the awful conceit that someone might actually care to read what I have to say. Posts may be added often, rarely, or never again. As always, my mood and motivation are unpredictable.

Walmart Hires Veterans . . .

. . . at minimum wage!  Walmart does a great job congratulating itself for its pledge to hire veterans.  Walmart is also well-known for its low pay, part-time hours, shitty benefits and anti-labor policies.  So someone posted this meme on Facebook,

and the conservatives rushed in to defend good ol' Walmart, their comments best summarized like so:

"At least it's a job."
"Does your company hire veterans?"
"If they don't like it at Walmart, they should work someplace else."

Yes, it's comforting to know they're free to explore all their many minimum wage options.  But that not's the point of the meme.  It's that Walmart, McDonald's and too many other employers these days rely on the tax-paying public to subsidize their low labor costs via government programs for their poverty-level workers.  Walmart is abusing the social safety net for its own bottom-line benefit.  No wonder they have Low Prices.  Always.
