Welcome to Buster's Blog

Irregular commentary on whatever's on my mind -- politics, sports, current events, and life in general. After twenty years of writing business and community newsletters, fifteen years of fantasy baseball newsletters, and two years of email "columns", this is, I suppose, the inevitable result: the awful conceit that someone might actually care to read what I have to say. Posts may be added often, rarely, or never again. As always, my mood and motivation are unpredictable.

"My Gun Is Cute, Sexy, Feminine, And Fun, Fun, Fun!"

The NRA/gun manufacturers are in the same demographic trick bag as their buddies in the Republican party -- too old, too male, too white.  There are just not enough of those traditional gun buyers to buy all the firearms which the gun makers would like to produce.

So now the purveyors of death are pushing insidious marketing strategies they hope will hook some new gun nuts to replace their shrinking core:

1.  Go "Joe Camel."  Shamelessly promote guns to children.  Get rid of age restrictions and required safety training for hunting licenses.  Create Junior Shooters magazine, for kids age 8 and up,  which promises to reach "the next generation of shooters and voters!"  Turn shooting ranges into live-action video games.  Current actual examples include the "Zombie Assault Course", the "Cowboy Action Course", the "Prohibition Gangster-Era Package", and the "Black Ops Package".

2.  Think pink.  First, appeal to women with the idea that pink guns are cute and sexy.  Accessorize with pink gun purses and pink holster brassieres.  How chic!  Second, try to frighten females by peddling baseless fears -- society is filled with violent sexual predators coming for . . . you!  Better arm yourself, sister.

3.  Pander to the paranoid few.  Here we have the militias, the preppers, the survivalists, and the Timothy McVeighs of our world.  They may be few in number, but they're not interested in zombie-hunter make-believe.    These wackos believe a real Armageddon is imminent, and to protect their turf, they'll spend every cent they have on more and more guns and ammo.  They're good customers.  And they'll sure as shit shoot your ass if you try to take their dried apricots.

4.  Arm the Mexican drug lords.  Every well-equipped narcotraficante carries a couple AR-15's.  According to the GAO, almost 90 percent of firearms seized in Mexico come from the U.S., and most of those come from gun dealers and gun shows in border states.

It's all so thoroughly disgusting, and we seem incapable of doing anything to correct it.  I'm trying, in my small way, by supporting Americans For Responsible Solutions.  You too, maybe?

  2. Dear BM -- Your sister is not chic, she is an idiot. Statistics conclusively show that guns in the home add to violence and danger, they don't prevent it. Guns in the home are far more likely to be used in anger than in self-defense. I hope your sister doesn't accidentally shoot her own tits off!

Note to readers: "BM" (what an appropriate acronym!) does not have a sister. BM is not a human being, but is instead a website engaged in the despicable practice of selling handguns and accessories specifically to women. Their marketing is a combination of fear and fashion, a pastel-colored lie.

These sort of website robo-replies are oddly interesting, and Buster gets them every now and then. I wonder what they're trying to accomplish.

  3. What statistic, funny how those who are anti gun always say statistic show or its a fact but dont provide any facts or statistics. Go to the FBIs page and look at the actual unbias statistics of gun violence and you will see not just gun crimes but all crime is higher in those places where so called gun control is in effect. Criminals dont obey gun laws and all they do is create free fire zones for criminals. Cold hard fact the only thing that stops a bad man with a gun is a good man with a gun be it law enforcement or a lawfully armed citizen.

  4. As of 08/25/19, RAINN.ORG states that every 92 seconds an American is sexually assaulted, hardly a baseless fear. While firearms, pink or otherwise, might only prevent a fraction of these crimes, having no firearms almost certainly increases a rapist's chance for success. Perverts aside, there are plenty of non-sexual offenses to worry about including simple/felonious assault, murder, animal attacks, theft of property, etc. Defense of others who are unarmed or otherwise incapable of defending themselves is also a huge priority. Just because you're not comfortable with a piece of equipment , pink or otherwise, doesn't mean it shouldn't be available to those who are more proactive.
