Welcome to Buster's Blog

Irregular commentary on whatever's on my mind -- politics, sports, current events, and life in general. After twenty years of writing business and community newsletters, fifteen years of fantasy baseball newsletters, and two years of email "columns", this is, I suppose, the inevitable result: the awful conceit that someone might actually care to read what I have to say. Posts may be added often, rarely, or never again. As always, my mood and motivation are unpredictable.

It Was Cold, But Not That Cold!

It was abnormally cold on Monday and Tuesday of this week -- sub-zero high temps and a howling wind that made it feel even worse.  The weather gurus blamed it on a "polar vortex" and said it hadn't been that cold in twenty years.  But it didn't last long and it's much better now.

Last night, we heard from the young son.  Buster Jr. reported that he had been housebound since Monday because his car wouldn't start.  He said that, due to the cold, he suspected "fuel line freeze-up."

Remember those old Sohio gasoline commercials from the 1960's?  Their pitch was that their gas was guaranteed to prevent fuel line freeze-up.  The implication was that other inferior brands were freezing up left and right.  Sohio's tagline was something like, "If you don't go, we pay the tow!"

A comforting promise, but total bullshit.  Sohio never paid any towing bills because gasoline has a freeze point of approximately -40 to -80 degrees Fahrenheit.  Your car might not start, but it's not because the gas is frozen.  Around here, it just doesn't get that cold.

We suggested to Buster Jr. that he likely had a dead battery.  Today he let us know that he got a jump from a friend and the car started up immediately.

Life is for learning.  :)
