Welcome to Buster's Blog

Irregular commentary on whatever's on my mind -- politics, sports, current events, and life in general. After twenty years of writing business and community newsletters, fifteen years of fantasy baseball newsletters, and two years of email "columns", this is, I suppose, the inevitable result: the awful conceit that someone might actually care to read what I have to say. Posts may be added often, rarely, or never again. As always, my mood and motivation are unpredictable.

Bridge Troll

The putative front-runner for the 2016 GOP Presidential nomination, New Jersey Governor Chris Christie is an odd mix.  At times, he can seem like a good guy, a real mensch with bipartisan appeal.  But he frequently comes off as a bellicose, blowhard bully -- a nasty, old-school political boss.  Right now, he's leaving the latter impression.

In the run-up to his re-election last fall, Christie was trying to show his national viability by garnering endorsements from local Democratic mayors.  When the mayor of Fort Lee, N.J. declined to play ball, Christie and his staff secretly took their revenge by deliberately closing the town's access lanes to the George Washington Bridge, thereby causing four days of hellacious traffic problems.  Ha-ha!  That'll teach those Democrats in Fort Lee!

That was back in September.  The long-rumored truth of it -- a stupid life-threatening political payback, a dirty trick -- finally came out early this week.  Yesterday, Christie promptly fired two underlings then staged a two-hour mea culpa press conference.  His Heftiness said he was sorry (yeah, no shit, I bet you are) and claimed he had no knowledge that any of this had gone on until the day before.  Yep, spent four months in blissful, ignorant darkness until Wednesday when somebody finally flipped a switch.

The last part smells bad, and I ain't buyin' it.  Even if he didn't personally order the lanes to be shut down, he certainly knew about, and long ago.  Puh-leeze!

Christie is playing in that neck of the political woods where shit runs uphill, and I think the Big Boy really stepped in it this time.
