Welcome to Buster's Blog

Irregular commentary on whatever's on my mind -- politics, sports, current events, and life in general. After twenty years of writing business and community newsletters, fifteen years of fantasy baseball newsletters, and two years of email "columns", this is, I suppose, the inevitable result: the awful conceit that someone might actually care to read what I have to say. Posts may be added often, rarely, or never again. As always, my mood and motivation are unpredictable.

Comment & Response to "Trumpty Dumpty" Post

On Sunday, I made up and posted this bit of doggerel about Trump's "wall-or-else" ultimatum:

Trumpty Dumpty dreamt of a wall.
Trumpty Dumpty threatened us all:
"If you don't pay $5 billion when e'er I say when,
I'll shut down the government again and again."

The next day brought this comment from an unknown Mr./Ms. Anonymous:

  1. Why did you not go into a fit of rage when Schumer shut down the government earlier this Year?
Right... because you are just a political hack. A lockstep, leftist lemming ("Triple L")!
As some might say "a useful idiot". Simply put, a propagandist for a "progressive" cause the goals of which you are not fully aware. One of a myriad of left-wing bloggers who are used laughingly and cynically by the leaders of the "progressive" cause.
As history promises, you will likely be among the first to be discarded when you are no longer "useful to the cause".
At least you have one view on your blog! Your handlers will be proud!

I posted this image back in January of this year.  Now I think I may have heard from him!  LOL!!

Mr. Anonymous Troll's cranky comment is worth a response and a short history lesson.  Threats of government shut downs and short-term funding Continuing Resolutions (as opposed to full appropriations bills) were favorite ploys of the original Orange Man, John Boehner, now retired.  But the shut down of January 20, 2018 was the doing of Agent Orange Donald Trump, not Chuck Schumer.

Recall that the DACA protections instituted by Obama in 2012 were rescinded by Trump in 2017.  In early January 2018, as the then-current funding C.R. was about to expire, Trump publicly agreed to the bipartisan Durbin-Graham compromise immigration deal to preserve DACA and maintain funding for the government and for ongoing border security (not the wall).  But then Stephen Miller got a hold of him, and Trump promptly went on a racist rant about shit-hole countries, reneged on his promise and demanded hard line anti-immigration measures including the wall.  The D's were understandably pissed at being lied to.

The funding deadline of January 20th arrived without a new C.R.  But on January 22nd, a new bipartisan CR to fund the government through February 9th was reached, and the very brief shut down was over.  Without a wall.  Without new immigration legislation.

"Our country needs a good shutdown." -- Trump, May 2017

If immigration law isn't made more stringent, "We'll do a shutdown.  It's worth it.  I'd love to see a shutdown if we don't get this stuff taken care of." -- Trump,  February 2018

"If we don't get what we want, I am proud to shut down the government for border security." -- Trump, December 2018

For the record, DACA still survives, barely, courtesy of numerous legal challenges to Trump's rescission.

Mr. Troll is inaccurate when he says Schumer shut down the government.  Shutdown threats are obviously Trump's thing, not Schumer's.  Trump let it happen in January, and now he may let it happen again.  Happy Holidays, America!

Speaking of America, the vast majority of Americans are opposed to the idea of Trump's coast-to-coast wall.  The proportion against it is something on the order of 70/30.  So once again, Yam Face is yapping to his insufficient "base."

As for Mr. Troll's attempted insults, I'm glad to be among the "myriad of left-wing bloggers."  I do this by myself and for my own amusement.  I'm not being "used" and I have no "handlers."  And yes, I do have at least one view on this blog -- 468,796 views, to be precise up to this moment.

That's minuscule contrasted with big-time websites.  They get that many views every minute.  But it seems like a big number to a small-time "propagandist" such as myself.  I'll take it.

So thanks for visiting!  Come back anytime.
