Today, I raise my glass or orange juice to the state of Florida. Their state legislators just passed a gun reform bill which requires a 3-day waiting period for gun purchases, a minimum age of 21 to buy a gun, a ban on bump stocks, and appropriates more state funding for mental health programs. Good!
On the flip side, they did not ban assault weapons and they approved on-site gun possession for school staff. Not so good.
Is it enough? Of course not. Not nearly enough. But it's a start, a baby step in the right direction. And it happened in Florida, that red neck haven, the crazy-cracker-barrel home of the infamous stand-your-ground (license to kill) law. If they can do it, so can others. Now we'll see if Governor Voldemort signs it.
Buckle up and be patient. It took a long time for America to get so gun crazy. It'll take a long time to restore gun sanity. But the movement has begun. I wish our invertebrate federal legislators would take the lead on sensible gun law reform, rather than wait out the state-by-state approach. Yeah, if they would go ahead and do that, that would be great.
