Welcome to Buster's Blog

Irregular commentary on whatever's on my mind -- politics, sports, current events, and life in general. After twenty years of writing business and community newsletters, fifteen years of fantasy baseball newsletters, and two years of email "columns", this is, I suppose, the inevitable result: the awful conceit that someone might actually care to read what I have to say. Posts may be added often, rarely, or never again. As always, my mood and motivation are unpredictable.

Fat Cat On A Hot Tin Roof

Looks like Droopy Dog
Once upon a time, I had some respect for John Dowd, the MLB lawyer whose investigation took down Pete Rose, a lying, strutting, narcissistic attention whore who believed he could get away with anything.  That was in 1989.  These days, my respect has vanished.  Dowd works as the personal attorney for another lying, strutting, narcissistic attention whore who believes he can get away with anything.  Dowd clearly subscribes to the old legal adage that the best client is rich and dumb.

Yesterday, the fake president's mouthpiece hailed his boss's firing of Andrew McCabe and "prayed" for an immediate end to Robert Mueller's probe, which he called "fraudulent and corrupt."

In his emailed statement, Dowd included a bit of "amended" dialogue from the Tennessee Williams' play, Cat On a Hot Tin Roof:

"Big Daddy"
“What’s that smell in this room [Bureau]?” Dowd wrote. “Didn’t you notice it, Brick [Jim]? Didn’t you notice a powerful and obnoxious odor of mendacity in this room [Bureau]?... There ain’t nothin’ more powerful than the odor of mendacity [corruption]... You can smell it. It smells like death.”

Dowd is obviously implying that the FBI [Bureau] and James Comey [Jim] are corrupt and mendacious.  But his literary reference is a curious one, full of unintended irony.

In the play, the line is delivered by the "Big Daddy" character, patriarch of his troubled family.  Big Daddy is rich and dumb.  He's relentlessly cruel and controlling, an imperious, dishonest, womanizing hater.  (Remind you of anyone?)  He's also unaware that he's terminally ill.  The death he smells is his own.
