Welcome to Buster's Blog

Irregular commentary on whatever's on my mind -- politics, sports, current events, and life in general. After twenty years of writing business and community newsletters, fifteen years of fantasy baseball newsletters, and two years of email "columns", this is, I suppose, the inevitable result: the awful conceit that someone might actually care to read what I have to say. Posts may be added often, rarely, or never again. As always, my mood and motivation are unpredictable.

NFL Memo On Acceptable Stances During The Anthem

One more time on this issue.

Kneeling athletes are not disrespecting the flag, the national anthem or the military.  They are not protesting against the flag, the anthem or the military.

They are protesting systemic racial injustice and police brutality.  (If you don't believe these problems exist in our society, you're part of the problem.)

Their protests are effective, brief, silent, non-disruptive, non-violent and not doing any harm to anyone.  However, real harm is done daily to real people through racial injustice, bigotry and police brutality.  This is the point.

As high-profile African-Americans, these kneeling athletes are not making the point about themselves.  They're using their platform and their visibility to raise awareness in a way lower-profile African-Americans cannot possibly match.

If you're looking for a good reason, a real reason to boycott the NFL, try their decades-long orchestrated efforts to deny and escape culpability for head trauma and the damage done to players by CTE.
