Trump Is Holding Us Hostage

During the Obama years I ran this cartoon many times as the GOP repeatedly took us to the brink of government shutdown, and actually did it once.  Now they're doing it again, but this time they're not led by the original Orange Man, Weeper of the House John Boehner.  Now the hostage-taker is the Orange Baby who's, like, really smart.

The country has spent several days freaking out over the latest manifestation of Trump's obvious racism.  We should.  He's been a racist his entire life, a fact which cannot forgiven, forgotten, or glossed over by morally bankrupt Republican apologists.  But right now, there are bigger fish to fry.

The clock is ticking on another shutdown deadline -- this Friday, three days hence.

Last week, there was a Durbin-Graham bipartisan deal to preserve DACA and include some immigration "reforms" and border "security" measures.  The fake president said he'd sign it ("I'll sign anything!"), and all seemed agreed on the need to fund the government with no shutdown shenanigans, even if just another short punt.

But then the Stable Genius had to go down the Shithole, piss backwards on his DACA promises, hurl schoolboy insults at everyone, and then try to blame his steaming mess on the Democrats and claim they want a shutdown.  Which is horseshit (something a stable genius ought to be familiar with).

The real impediment here, the constipation in the bureaucratic colon, is Trump.

Democrats and many Republicans are understandably upset by Trump's DACA reversal and sudden demands for hardline immigration measures.  But Democrats will not shut down the government over it.  If anyone does, it will be Trump.  He'll do his best to provoke a shutdown because he's decided the Durbin-Graham compromise just doesn't keep enough brown and black people out of America.  He'll try to hold us hostage by tying a routine government funding measure to his racist, bigoted, anti-immigrant policies and money for the wall we were never going to pay for.  And he'll fail.

There will be enough Democrats to prevent a shutdown, and there ought to be enough D's and R's to bring the DACA bill to vote and pass it -- soon, and in spite of Prima Donald.  To hell with him.  Legal protection for almost a million affected young people has wide political and public support.

So stuff it up Donald's shithole and snap it off!  Pass the DACA bill which he said he'd sign, and dare him to veto it.
