There's a growing school of thought that maybe felons who've served their time and paid their debt to society ought to have their right to vote restored, rather than remain disenfranchised non-participants for the rest of their lives. After their release, they become workers and consumers, they pay taxes, etc. I can't really see the harm in giving them back their vote.
Republicans are, of course, appalled by the notion. They believe there are too many damn people voting right now and they're loathe to add any more, especially low-life ex-cons.
But get this. Conservatives suddenly do an about-face if we grant ex-felons both voting rights and the right to purchase and possess firearms!“If someone asked me if I would rather vote for mayor or have a gun, I'd rather have a gun,” said Grover Norquist, president of Americans for Tax Reform.
"It's the obvious compromise," says noted non-compromiser Grover Norquist of Americans For Tax Reform. "All the conservatives [we talked to] agree that voting rights [for ex-felons] should not precede gun rights."
In other words, the voting part is kinda hard to swallow at first, but throw in guns too? That makes all the difference. Love it!
Friggin' unbelievable. Everything's better with guns.
