Three Cheers For Jungle Jack!
First came the news about poor Marius the giraffe. His Danish zookeepers pronounced him to be "genetically redundant" among their group of giraffes, so Marius was publicly dispatched, butchered and fed to the zoo's lions. Onlookers included many children on a field trip. How educational.
Now a second Danish zoo says that it too has a "superfluous" giraffe, also named Marius, and they may be "forced" to do the same damn thing. What? Who knew the Danes were so cruel?
That was enough for Jack Hanna, our Director Emeritus of the Columbus Zoo. Jungle Jack quickly raised over $100,000 and has offered to buy Marius II and ship him over here, where he may happily live out his days diluting the gene pool of our Ohio giraffe population. (No word yet if his offer has been accepted.)
Hooray for Jungle Jack! Boo on Danish zoos!
