Welcome to Buster's Blog

Irregular commentary on whatever's on my mind -- politics, sports, current events, and life in general. After twenty years of writing business and community newsletters, fifteen years of fantasy baseball newsletters, and two years of email "columns", this is, I suppose, the inevitable result: the awful conceit that someone might actually care to read what I have to say. Posts may be added often, rarely, or never again. As always, my mood and motivation are unpredictable.

Buster's Political Forecast: Increasing Nothingness, With Periods Of Heavy Nothing, Followed By Less Than Nothing

"More friggin' Republicans?  That's just sad!"
The low-turnout mid-term projections are not encouraging.  The Republicans are predicted to gain a slight majority in the U.S. Senate, while maintaining their House majority, thus giving the GOP control of both houses of Congress.  What will it all mean?

For the next two years, almost nothing.  It certainly will not mean any sort of conservative "mandate" for the country.  It will mean Boehner's House of Nuts will continue to crank out hateful but hopeless bills.  It means Harry Reid and Mitch McTurtle will switch roles, with Reid now the one procedurally gumming things up in the Senate.  It means that in the unlikely event of anything actually reaching the president's desk, Obama will veto it immediately.  It means that if Obama is to move forward on his agenda, he'll do it by executive order, not by legislation.

We'll get the same nothing we've become accustomed to, probably a bit more of it, with only small and meaningless variations.  Same gridlock, different necktie.  Sorry to seem like such a cynic, but the progressive penchant for napping through mid-terms pisses me off.  We should do better.

We can do better and change the story in 2016, but it's gonna take a huge turnout to make it happen.  Until then, grin and bear it.
