Ratings -- They're Overrated
Our infamously vain and narcissistic pretend president is obsessed with his ratings. Although his low public approval ratings must really chap his ass, he was quick to latch on to -- and take credit for -- the ratings for the Roseanne TV show: "Did you see Roseanne's ratings? Unbelievable! Over 18 million people! And it was about us!"
Donnie Discord shouldn't get overly excited by the ratings for a broadcast TV show, especially in these days of 300 cable channels plus streaming video. The vast majority of America was not watching Roseanne.
The TV marketplace has changed tremendously in the past fifty years, but here's an historical example for Hair Furor to consider:
In 1957, CBS aired a live broadcast of Cinderella, starring Julie Andrews. It was seen by 107 million viewers, 63% of the total U.S. population at that time of 170 million. Truly a major TV event.
Last week's premiere of the ABC remake of Roseanne drew 18 million viewers, less than 6% of today's total population of 326 million. Meh.
Pandering to his deplorable base -- that's Donnie's six-percent solution.
