Welcome to Buster's Blog

Irregular commentary on whatever's on my mind -- politics, sports, current events, and life in general. After twenty years of writing business and community newsletters, fifteen years of fantasy baseball newsletters, and two years of email "columns", this is, I suppose, the inevitable result: the awful conceit that someone might actually care to read what I have to say. Posts may be added often, rarely, or never again. As always, my mood and motivation are unpredictable.

Federal Judge Slaps Ohio

In yesterday's mail, I received my official application to receive an absentee ballot from Ohio Secretary of State Jon Husted.  In the last election, he did not mail these apps at all.  If you wished to vote absentee, you had to visit his website to find the absentee app yourself, print it, complete it and mail it.  Recent court rulings now require Husted to at least send the app to all registered voters.

But it's interesting that the most prominent message on the envelope is "DO NOT FORWARD."  If you've recently moved, you probably won't get one of these in the mail.  Kinda sucks.  Inside, the material says, "In the Buckeye state, we make it EASY TO VOTE and HARD TO CHEAT."  Those who move commit voter fraud?

Also yesterday, a federal judge issued a slap-down to the Kasich administration's unconstitutional voter-suppression tactics.  The judge reinstated in-person early voting hours during the evening and on at least two Sundays, and also reinstated the "Golden Week" of early voting, when people can register and vote in person on the same day.

Ohio's Republicans are grumbling and contemplating an appeal.  Good luck with that!
